چکیده

The nematophagous fungus Hirsutella rhossiliensis Minter and Brady produces adhesive spores that ge rmina te direct ly through the cuticle of host nematodes (3). When juveni les o f the plant-parasi t ic nematode Criconemella xenoplax (Raski) Luc and Raski were inoculated with spores of this fungus and incubated in water, only a small pe rcen tage became infec ted (3). Nematodes that were heat stressed or heat killed, however, were invaded and colonized by the fungus in water. These results indicate that H. rhossiliensis is a parasite of nematodes under stress, but later experiments (4) showed that addition of certain solutes including K + stimulated parasitism of unstressed individuals. Furthermore, the level o f parasitism in soil extracts was positively correlated with conductivity measurements of the soil extract, which is a measure of salt content. Many reports demonstrate increases in spore germination or more rapid fungal growth in response to cations in the medium. For example, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum and Verticillium albo-atrum grew more rapidly on agar adjusted to 10 or 2 0 bars with salts than with no salt amendment or on a medium adjusted to the same osmotic potential with sucrose (5). Suppression of cyst nematode by natural infestation of a nematophagous fungus.

Penetration of cabbage roots by Heterodera schachtii was suppressed 50-77% in loamy sand naturally infested with the nematophagous fungus Hirsutella rhossiliensis. When Heterodera schachtii was incubated in the suppressive soil without plants for 2 days, 40-63% of the juveniles had Hirsutella rhossiliensis spores adhering to their cuticles. Of those with spores, 82-92% were infected. Infected n...

An Assay for Hirsutella rhossiliensis Spores and the Importance of Phialides for Nematode Inoculation.

A spore assay was developed to measure the relative density of spores of the nematophagous fungus Hirsutella rhossiliensis in soil. Orchard soil containing H. rhossiliensis-parasitized Criconemella xenoplax was placed in vials and incubated for 0-120 days before the addition of probe nematodes, Heterorhabditis heliothidis juveniles. After 18 hours, H. heliothidis were extracted from the soil an...

Effects of Carbendazim on the Nematophagous Fungus Hirsutella rhossiliensis and the Ring Nematode.

The nematophagous fungus Hirsutella rhossiliensis Minter and Brady parasitizes CriconemeUa xenoplax (Raski) Luc & Raski in many California stone fruit orchards (5). We assume that the nematode population density would be higher if the fungus were absent, but the suppressive effect of the fungus has not been quantified in the field. Biocides have been used to inhibit antagonists of pests and thu...

Parasitic and Saprophytic Abilities of the Nematode-Attacking Fungus Hirsutella rhossiliensis.

The ability of Hirsutella rhossiliensis to colonize various substrates in sterile and nonsterile soil was measured. Hirsutella rhossiliensis was recovered from 67% and 77% of living, inoculated Criconemella xenoplax incubated in sterile and nonsterile soil, respectively. In contrast, the fungus was recovered from 100% and 18% of heat-killed, inoculated nematodes incubated on sterile and nonster...

The living strategy of nematophagous fungi

The infection structures, trophism, and ecological character of nematophagous fungi are reviewed in this article on the basis of data extracted from the literature and the most recent experiments conducted in this area. Traditionally, nematophagous fungi are classifi ed into four groups according to their modes of attacking nematodes: nematode-trapping fungi using adhesive or mechanical hyphal ...
